The Interview With Ashley Filby. Financial Planner At Insight Financial Associates.

Louis: Can you share with me a little bit about your experience in the financial advice sector?

Ashley: When you first become qualified, you are so full of ideas and different solutions. But you quickly learn that you are not in the numbers business, you are in the business of people. Thoughts, feeling, real fears, things going wrong, and you have to be there as their support. In times gone by, financial advice has been very transactional but now it’s a lot more about supporting your clients through everything, and that is the most enjoyable part of my work. The more time you spend with people, the more impact you have. What Insight allows me to do is to have that time with people.

I had a few different careers before Insight, even though I am quite young! I went to University to study business. I didn’t really enjoy Uni, thought, because it didn’t really feel like I was actually doing anything. I like to be out helping people, getting a life experience and learning about people. I did start working initially at a smaller more local firm. I did all of my exams myself because unfortunately there wasn’t really a support network with that firm. I felt like I was being held back a bit and in hindsight, it was probably mostly to do with my age. Once I qualified, it was time for me to move on and progress with things, and that is when I moved over to Insight. They immediately could see that hunger that I had and the want to help people, and they gave me the opportunity to do that. It was a hard slog to get off the ground, but now, nearly five years in, I’ve got a large number of loyal clients that really lean on me for support and guidance. But it’s not just me. I am being backed up by 200-300 people in the advisor community at Insight.

Customer Success Stories From Insight Financial Associates

Louis: Over the years you must have had some great customer success stories with Insight Financial Associates

Ashley: There are lots. At Insight, it doesn’t matter who you are. We want to help you to achieve what you want to achieve in your life, without worrying about money. There is no such thing as a simple person. We are all different and everyone needs help at the end of the day, because there is so much information out there. How do you decipher it? How do you decide what’s right for you? Because there are pros and cons to everything you do.

Just a couple of weeks ago, someone wanted to retire because they didn’t want to work on a factory floor this winter. I immediately said ‘of course!’ and I went to visit them face to face, sat in their lounge, plugged their cash flow into their television so that we can see exactly how much they would need to comfortably retire. I was like a weather presenter! I worked through all their different scenarios, how to mitigate any risk that might happen with retirement, and they came out of that meeting ready to retire comfortably. I’m now getting WhatsApp message from them telling me about the cruise they are planning for their retirement and the new camper van that they are buying to travel round Scotland. It’s fantastic to hear and see.  That is why I do this job. I can come out of a meeting and change someone’s life.

There are also other scenarios for more affluent clients who have plenty of wealth but perhaps don’t want to pay too much tax, and don’t know how to successfully manage their money. And that’s how we help them. You just need to know the risk and rewards of doing so. Our tech and cashflow systems at Insight can are very useful for these scenarios. There are honestly loads of success stories and just due to the nature of the business, there are times where things aren’t rosy. But it is important for all of our clients to feel like we are there to help and support them.

Why Should You Consider Financial Advice?

Louis: In your view, what are the most compelling reasons that someone should consider financial advice from Insight?

Ashley: It is quite funny that people (incorrectly) think that they need to earn a certain amount, or have a certain amount of money to speak to an advisor. At Insight we are there for you, no matter what. We are all about the client. If the client is in the right place, doing the right things…that is our job done. It doesn’t matter who you are. You should speak to a financial advisor if you have a question, because we’re there for you. You will only know the benefits of talking to a financial advisor by doing it. We are more than happy to do that with you.

Louis: How does Insight stay up to date with the latest trends and developments in the financial world? And how does that benefit your clients?

Ashley: There is lots of reading and staying up to date with new changes in policy and law, but there is also a lot of sharing of knowledge and experience. Because we have a community of 80 advisors at Insight, there is old blood and new blood all working together, sharing knowledge and helping each other. Knowledge is a distributed together like a hive mind. There is nothing worse than being on your own and having to come up with your own ideas without input from others. To be able to bounce ideas and thoughts of others in great. As a firm as well, we have our own education department. We have a research team made up of former analysts and bank managers, those kind of people working all the time to make sure that we are up to date with where we are in the world.

Should I Invest Money With A Financial Advisor?

Louis: What would you say to someone considering investing their money with the help of a financial advisor? Especially if they are unsure whether it is worth it.

Ashley: Just speak to someone. Because we are there for you. If there isn’t anything that comes out of it in the end, fine. We have done our job to speak to you and provide you with the help and information that you need. Obviously we don’t work with everyone, although we would love to. But the people that we do look after are really well looked after. We want to give the best service possible. I would say that there is no ‘too small’ amount and there is no ‘too large’ amount. Life can be so unexpected. The people we speak to will be an expert in their own field, but unfortunately life isn’t kind enough that we can be experts in everything. Having to juggle your career, your family life, your vocations, and your finances on top can be very difficult. So why not let a professional handle things for you. Someone who is highly qualified. Just take advice. And you will quickly see how much it can help.

Louis: What long term prospects or opportunities for growth do you see for Insight Financial Associates and yourself?

Ashley: I am currently pushing for my chartered exams because I want to be at the panicle of where I can be. I’ve done two already and I have another couple to do. So I will be working towards those over the next couple of years. It means that I can become an expert in more areas and have a real personal development. I believe that being chartered should and will become the minimum standard in the future for financial advisors, just to ensure that everyone is qualified and experienced enough to provide the highest standard of advice. Insight as a business, over the last few years we have acquired several businesses to expand our reach and cover more areas, recruit more experts to the team, and this will continue.

There are so many advisors out there that want to progress and have the opportunity to do more and help more and Insight want to do this with more advisors and firms moving forward. As a business we will just continue to grow. As a firm, we are just a great place to be. Lots of opportunities for people looking to join. If you want to become an advisor, it is a great place to do it because we are that incubator. Lot’s of support. Watch this space!
